Living
in Kano has helped me appreciate tea and its benefits. Tea is called ‘Shai’ in
Kano and a lot of people make a living selling tea here. They are popularly
called ‘MeShai’. Chai is another name for Tea, so Chai Tea is actually a repetition..
Ingredients:
·
2 blackpepper seeds
·
1 cinnamon stick
·
1 inch fresh ginger root, peeled
·
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
·
1 cinnamon stick (in a pinch, you
can use 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
Instructions:
1.
Place all the ingredients in a small
saucepan with 2 cups water.
2.
Bring to the boil, then turn down to
a gentle simmer.
3.
Simmer for 5 minutes.
4.
Strain off the tea and spices, and
place the tea back in the saucepan.
5.
Add a little non-dairy milk, and if
you want it sweeter, add 1 tsp of honey.
6.
Warm your tea to the desired
temperature and serve.
Topping:
If you want to get real fancy, you can steam a little of your milk and add it to your Shai to make a latte.
If you want to get even fancier, you can top with a little whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
